Growing up on the south shore of Long Island I was no stranger to seafood. I remember spending countless weekends eating and drinking with friends and family. Whether it be fried clam strips, crab cakes with hush puppies, or shrimp and crab, there was always good food and good company.
Having since moved to Abilene, it has been quite a while since I able to have that home-cooked seafood. Enter Kaseys Soul Bar and grill. Located at 829 Judge Ely, Kasey’ s Seafood is a family owned business providing great seafood recipes from Maryland. Kaseys strives to provide an atmosphere where all are welcomed. In their words, Kasey’s “Enjoys providing great food for great folks!”.
Now, let’s talk about some food. Kasey’s has a wide variety of seafood items on their menu, but the one I had to try was the soft shell crab! It has been 12 years since I have had this delicacy and I couldn’t wait. For those who do not know, soft shell crab is a crab harvested right after molting. This allows you to eat the entire crab without all the work.
Kasey’s take on the dish did not disappoint. The crab was delicious as was the rest of the platter, which had golden fried shrimp, crab cakes, and hush puppies. Other items we had were the catfish fillets and shrimp cocktail served with their house-made sauce.
Other seafood specialties such as Po’ Boys, Whiting, and Trout are also on the menu. Kasey’s also steams Blue Crab, Snow Crab, Dungeness crab, Shrimp, Crawfish, Scallops, and Mussels regularly. If you are not in the mood for seafood, they do offer burgers and Cowboy Steak and Cheese but I would still find a way to sneak in seafood on the side!
Kasey’s serves up a handful of original sides. Collard greens are something you don’t see much of in Abilene and I was happy to see them on their menu. Mac n’ Cheese and Candied Yams are two more delicious sides offered. Yellow rice, sweet fries, and coleslaw round out the sides menu.
Kasey’s is definitely bringing the food, but they are also trying to bring the community with comedy nights and open mic nights. In talking with the owners, they said “We strive to provide an atmosphere where all are welcomed. We want to showcase a place where local talent, artist, thinkers, and dreamers can enjoy themselves”.
