It’s time for fall! There are some really fun events happening right here in Abilene, Texas. I’ve compiled a bucket list so you don’t miss out on anything fun.
Oktoberfest – The Abilene Philharmonic Orchestra is celebrating Oktoberfest on September 17th from 4 P.M. – 7 P.M. This is a family friendly and free event. They will have food and drinks available to purchase also. There is a kids’ petting zoo and a scavenger hunt. Come out and enjoy some polka tunes and German food.
Big Country Balloon Festival – This free festival will be taking place at Red Bud Park from September 23rd through 25th. There will be live music, crafts, food, train rides and inflatables. It’s a family friendly event and there will be something for all ages. Make plans to see the hot air balloon night glow on Friday or Saturday night. If you have ever dreamed about riding in a hot air balloon, you can enjoy a tethered ride. It’ll be a tons of fun!
The Pumpkin Man – Abilene has their very own pumpkin man! You can book your own pumpkin party with him or follow his Facebook page to find him out and about! Last year one of our neighbors hosted a pumpkin party, and my boys loved picking out their very own pumpkins. The Pumpkin man will have his pumpkins in downtown Abilene outside of Casa Authentique on Saturday September 24th. This event will benefit Cancer Services Network.
Fort Griffin BBQ Cook-Off – This family friendly barbeque will be taking place on September 24th. Hopefully it will give us a chance to enjoy some cool fall weather. There will be live music all day as well as children’s activities. Mike Ryan Band will be headlining a concert beginning at 7:30 P.M.
Pillage-the-Village – Get geared up for Halloween with a fun trick-or-treat experience at Buffalo Gap Historical Village on October 8th. Children 12 and under are invited to come get their faces painted, play games and trick-or-treat. The Buffalo Gap Historical Village will also be offering ghost tours on October 15th, 22nd and 29th.
Boo at the Zoo – Join the Abilene Zoo on October 29th for a trick-or-treat experience among the animals. Beware of little goblins you might see lurking about. There will be a costume contest, so dress your best! Little ones can also enjoy games and bounce houses.
Backyard S’mores- Fall is the perfect time to enjoy some s’mores in your own backyard. Invite your neighbors and make a fire. The kids are sure to enjoy a special yummy treat.
Fall Foliage – Head outside with your kids and enjoy the fall leaves. Go on a leaf scavenger hunt and turn it into a fun teaching activity! Head over to The Butlers’ Quarters for some ideas to get you started.
Mummy Dogs – My kids go crazy for this festive dinner! They are simple to make! It’ll be a dinner your kids will talk about for a long time.
Abilene State Park – As the weather cools off, it is the perfect time to enjoy the great outdoors. Gather up your family for a day of fun and camping. If staying all night in a tent is not your thing, then rent a yurt for a more comfortable night. Consider a spooky night of camping over Halloween weekend. Trick-or-treaters will be invited to the state park for a night of fun. If you decorate a campsite and pass out candy, then you will get a second night of camping for free. There is also a contest for the best decorated camping site. Head to their Facebook events page for more details and to register. The state park will also be hosting Frontier Days on November 5th. You will be able to see a glimpse of what Texas was like during the frontier.
Hope you add a few events to your own family bucket list. Go enjoy Abilene!
